Bantwal: A lorry parked on the National Highway near Melkar rolled forward and hit a car on Friday. Two women waiting for the bus were also injured when they fell into a drain in order to avoid being crushed by the lorry.

The injured women, identified as Hazra Shama and Khatijatul, were admitted to a private hospital.

The Maruti Omni car was damaged in the incident.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver employed by a firm involved in the highway construction halted the lorry on the side of the service road and went to a local shop.

The driver, identified as Anand Paswan, had reportedly failed to engage the handbrake, causing the lorry to move. The lorry came to a halt leaning at a precarious angle.

A case of negligent driving has been registered at the Bantwal traffic police station.
