Bantwal: Bantwal Jayaram Acharya, the legendary artist who ruled the humor scene in Yakshagana for several decades, has left an indelible mark on the art form. Known for delivering humor that resonated with both tradition and modernity, his passing is considered a significant loss to the Yakshagana stage.

Acharya’s unique ability to craft wholesome humor that appealed to the current generation while remaining rooted in tradition earned him widespread admiration. For many performances and roles, he was the artist in demand— “only Jayaramanna could do justice.”

Although he never strayed from the traditional roots of Yakshagana humor, Acharya was not one to simply replicate the old style. His humor, while respecting tradition, was always relevant and well-received by contemporary audiences. Importantly, his performances conveyed meaningful social messages, and he was never one to delve into politics on stage.

A master of timing and spontaneous wit

Jayaram Acharya was revered for his impeccable timing and spontaneous wit, traits that endeared him to countless fans. He gained popularity during the era of Mijaru Annappa and Pulinchada, and later established himself as one of the leading humorists in the ‘Tenkutittu’ style of Yakshagana. Despite not focusing heavily on dramatic choreography, his unique dialogue delivery was enough to captivate audiences.

His presence on stage was so integral that many organizers would often inquire if “Jayaram Acharya would be performing” when planning Yakshagana events. During performances, even fellow senior artists would seek his advice, a testament to his expertise. When he enjoyed a particular role, his portrayal was always exceptional.

Health challenges and retirement

In his personal life, Jayaram Acharya maintained a simple lifestyle, but when it came to Yakshagana, he paid special attention to his costume, which added an extra layer of gravitas to his performances. Watching him step on stage in full costume was always a special sight for his fans.

In the past two to three years, Acharya’s health had begun to affect his performances. Despite his simple and consistent stage appearance, health issues, particularly heart problems, started causing noticeable changes in his acting. Doctors had advised him to take precautions, and there were instances during performances last year where his health forced him to stop mid-role. Due to these challenges, he was eventually granted retirement from the troupe.

The Yakshagana community has lost one of its finest humorists, whose influence and talent will be remembered for years to come.
