Bengaluru: Construction works of ‘Indira Canteen’ in Karnataka state capital is expected to kick start from Friday at Prakashnagar and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is likely to construct 100 canteens in a time span of 30 days. Indira Canteen facility was announced by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in his state budget 2017-18 with an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore.

As per the government order, BBMP will construct and maintain the canteens in the state capital. The canteen facility is aimed to provide food for poor, low class people in Bengaluru at a discount rate fixed by the government.

BBMP has already identified suitable locations to construct the canteens at 198 wards and has completed necessary background works to start construction of the canteens. Ten teams including eight to ten members in each group would construct the canteens and building of a canteen is expected to be completed within three days.

In the initial stage, canteens would be setup in 102 wards out of 198 wards identified to build the facilities as there were some issues in remaining 96 wards. Remaining 96 wards would get the canteen facility after the issues sorted out by the concerned authorities. BBMP has also invited tenders to the supply of food items to Indira canteens and the Palike would hand over the responsibility to suitable supplier based on some criteria.
