The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will soon make it compuLsory for people to get a licnse for their pets. Till now, pet registration was optional for owners.
The move aims to make pet owners more repsonsible as well as prevent illegal breeding and abandonment of animals.
Manjunath Shinde, Joint Director (Animal Husbandry) during an interaction with animal activists and veterinarians observed that most people adopt pets as a fashion statement and hoped that compulsory license for pets will make pet owners resposible and accountable.
“Pet parenting has become more fashionable than responsible. Licensing will help correct that,” Shinde said.
Owners will get a six-month time to register their pets once the rules are notified. Before licensing process, microchip installation and neutering of pets is required. Penalty of Rs 1000 and more will be levied on those who abandon their pets.
