Bengaluru: To commemorate the country’s 75th Independence Day, The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to plant 75,000 saplings and create 5,000 rainwater recharge wells in Bengaluru.

BBMP will identify spaces around the lake and plant the saplings along with the Horticulture Department, and the Lakes Department.

Also, the task of constructing 5,000 rainwater recharge wells around 1,300 parks within the BBMP jurisdiction is being taken up jointly by the BBMP and a nonprofit organization called United Way Bengaluru. The project will help save rainwater and recharge groundwater around the city.

Each well will be 12 feet in depth and 4 feet in circumference and it will hold approximately 4,000 litres of water which will help save a total of two crore litres of water.
