BBMP’s new ACP panel experiment in Bengaluru underpass Raises Safety Concerns

Bengaluru: In an effort to enhance aesthetics, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has initiated a project to install Aluminum Composite Panel (ACP) sheets—usually seen on corporate office buildings—within city underpasses, starting with the Tollgate underpass near Vijayanagar.

This installation, technically a form of “false ceiling,” aims to give underpasses a sleek, polished look but has raised safety concerns among engineers.

While ACP sheets are commonly used for interior beautification in low-stress environments like office buildings, experts warn that their installation in high-traffic areas could be hazardous.

A retired chief engineer told Udayavani that constant vehicular vibrations might eventually loosen these panels, which could pose a risk to commuters passing through the underpasses.

“In my experience, this is the first time false ceiling installations are being used in underpasses,” he shared, recalling a similar experiment a decade ago near Maharani College, where gypsum panels embedded with aluminum fragments were installed but eventually detached, causing public concern.

“This current ACP panel experiment seems to follow a similar path,” he cautioned.

BBMP’s decision has prompted suggestions for alternative beautification approaches. Civil Engineers Association, Bengaluru Chapter President, Shrikant S. Channal, proposed safer options, such as artistic wall paintings and installation of stylish lighting, which could enhance aesthetics without compromising safety.

“Risking the lives of commuters for aesthetic appeal is unnecessary,” Channal stated.

BBMP’s trial at the Tollgate underpass will be closely monitored, especially in light of these safety concerns, as the city considers expanding the initiative to other underpasses.
