Udupi: The summer’s heat is compelling people to drink water wherever possible. Due to the awareness on cleanliness, most of the people rely on Bisleri water expecting it to be clean. But it is being said that there are people dupe in this area also.

Around two days back, Manipal hospital’s retired senior lab technician Nityananda Patil, bought a bottle of Bisleri water from a shop in front of Udupi Court and consumed it. By evening, she started feeling weak. On that day, he had not consumed outside food. Other than from his house, he does not drink from anywhere else.

Therefore he concluded that the cause was the bottle of water and when he turned the bottle he found the label stating “Best before 6 Months” and the production date was May 2018.

According to Patil, they could be selling bottles of water which have passed their expiry date or filling contaminated water into discarded bottles and selling them. “Currently, in the heat of the summer, people buy Bisleri water whenever thirsty. Who knows how many people are selling contaminated water? Don’t know how many have spoilt their health due to this,” says Patil.

Even while saying that plastic is bad of health; we still eat and drink from containers made of plastic. Amidst this, how will the water be which has remained within a plastic container for a period of 6 months? People should be careful while buying bottles of water. The details printed on the bottle must be read. Procure a bill will buying any food or a bottle of water. In this way, legal action can be taken against the seller.

“The date of manufacture and expiry on the food item, bottle of water must be checked. Bill must be compulsorily procured from the shop from where the product is bought. If two witness are produced, it is possible to take action against the person who has sold the spoilt product,” informs Dr Vasudeva, Food safety Department, Udupi
