Belagavi: In a barbaric incident, a man hacked his wife to death in broad daylight near Kotekere in the city on Friday all because she dared to file for a divorce.

The unfortunate victim has been identified as Heena Kausar (24). Meanwhile, her husband Manzoor Elahi Nadaf (34) has been arrested after the incident. The attack took place when she was returning from the courthouse after attending a divorce hearing, sources said.

Locals were shell shocked to see Manzoor stabbing the woman with a sharp weapon, in full public view without any provocation. After the gruesome attack, Manzoor stood silently next to the bleeding woman. Many among them captured chilling scenes on their phones.

It is gathered that Heena had married Manzoor of Devalapura village in Bailahongal Taluk four years ago. About eight months ago she had filed an appeal for divorce. This is believed to be the motive behind the crime.

Critically injured in the attack, Heena was taken to the BIMS Hospital in Belagavi for treatment, but breathed her last on the way, sources added.

The incident took place in a crowded area under Malamaruti Police station limits.  A police team including DCP Ravindra visited the crime scene and conducted investigations.
