Belagavi: A five-year-old boy traveling on a two-wheeler was killed by a Manja thread that slit his throat on Sunday. The tragic incident occurred on National Highway 4 at Gandhi Nagar here when the boy and his father were out shopping for the Deepavali festival.

The deceased has been identified as Vardhana Eranna Beli (5), a resident of Anantapur village near Yamakanamaradi.

The boy and his father, Eeranna, were on their way home after buying clothes for Deepavali. Vardhana was seated in the front of the two-wheeler when an invisible thread suddenly wrapped around his neck and slit his throat. Despite best efforts by the father to save his son, the boy died on the spot, sources said.

Though the sharp thread used for kite flying has been banned, it is still in use with the thread being sold illegally on the black market. The boy’s family has demanded that the district administration and the police should take strict action to curb the sale of Manja.
