Today we celebrate Guru Purnima, an important observance in Indian tradition. The occasion is celebrated on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashadha. The day holds significance as it is dedicated to honoring Gurus, who guide individuals from darkness to light and ignorance to enlightenment in both spiritual and academic realms.
There are several beliefs about the origin of the day.
According to one tradition, this auspicious occasion is known as Vyasa Purnima, marking the birth anniversary of Vyasa Muni. Vyasa Muni, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, not only authored the Mahabharata but also played a crucial role in the epic. Devotees pay homage to Vyasa Muni on this day, seeking his blessings and divine grace.
In addition to worshipping Vyasa Muni and Lord Vishnu, Guru Purnima is also associated with the veneration of the Guru Graha (Jupiter). Jupiter, being connected with knowledge and wisdom, is believed to bestow devotees with enhanced wisdom and improved memory power. Therefore, individuals perform worship and rituals to seek blessings from Jupiter on this day.
Astrologers also suggest performing puja and ceremonies on Guru Purnima to mitigate the effects and seek remedies for those who experience challenges such as stunted growth, a decline in prosperity, or obstacles in their studies due to Guru Dosha (afflictions related to Jupiter).
It is worth mentioning that the Buddhist community also observes Guru Purnima with great enthusiasm and grandeur. This day holds special significance in Buddhism as it commemorates Gautama Buddha’s first sermon, which took place at Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh. Buddhists celebrate this day to honor and reflect upon the teachings and wisdom imparted by Gautama Buddha.
Nevertheless, Guru Purnima is a cherished occasion where people express their gratitude towards their Gurus, both spiritual and academic, and acknowledge the role they play in their lives. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking knowledge, wisdom, and enlightenment through the guidance of Gurus.
