Belthangady: Rare 13th century carved stone tablets have been discovered in a plot of land bought by Shivanna Gowda at Sonandur village in the taluka.

A Nag Bana (Naga shrine) was present on the land which after consultations with astrologer Manjunath Bhat was prepared for Jeernoddhara (renovation). While excavating the Nag Bana the eleven carved stone tablets were found five feet under the ground.

The stone tablets feature Nag yaksha, Nag yakshi, a baby Nag and a five-headed Nag.

It has been assumed that the shrine might have been a place of worship to seek blessings for marriage and children as the Nag yaksha and yakshi and a baby snake are present.

The Jeernoddhara work of the Naga Bana is underway and will be finished in the month of May.
