Belthangady: Forensic experts have confirmed the severely burnt human remains found at the edge of a rubber plantation at Sorake in Nada Gram Panchayat to be of a woman.

The forensic team that visited the scene of the crime, has estimated the age of the woman to be 30 to 40 years. Personal items including two toe rings, bangles, rings, and a wristwatch with burn marks, among others have also been recovered from the mortal remains and areas nearby, sources said.

After the forensic team collected evidence, the mortal remains were buried at the crematorium at Manchakal.

Senior police officers, including SP Rishikesh Bhagawan Sonawane, visited the scene.

Meanwhile, the identity of the victim still remains shrouded in mystery. The body had 90 percent burns which have made visual identification impossible.

Moreover, the site being in a remote hilly area, the chances of eyewitnesses are low.

It seems likely that the woman is not a local and was brought here for erasing evidence of the crime. Rains that lashed the region may have doused the fire, leaving the body partially burnt. The stench from the decomposed remains led to their discovery.

A case has been registered in this regard at Beltangady Police Station.
