Belthangady: Contamination of Somavati river disrupts water supply, kills thousands of fish
Team Udayavani, Apr 27, 2023, 8:35 AM IST
A large number of fish have died due to poisoning in the Somavati river, the main source of drinking water for the city, causing a severe water crisis.
The incident was reported this morning, where the water treatment plant in the river was found to be contaminated, resulting in the death of thousands of fish.
Currently, the city requires 10 lakh liters of water per day, and the supply was primarily dependent on this river. However, the supply has been halted due to the contamination, leaving the residents in a dire situation.
This is not the first time such an act has taken place in the same area. Three years ago, a similar incident occurred, and a case was registered against the culprits.
The town panchayat has now decided to lodge a complaint against this latest incident with the Belthangady police station.
