Belthangady: A 19-year-old student in Belthangady allegedly died by suicide after being blackmailed over an objectionable video by an Instagram friend.

The deceased has been identified as Harshit (19 years old), a resident of Ashok Nagar of Dharmasthala.

It is said that a stranger contacted him through his Instagram account about 15 days ago. Harshit began chatting with the stranger.

Soon after, Harshit received a video call from the same person who claimed that he had his private video and threatened to make it viral if he did not pay him Rs 11,000.

Harshit requested a deadline of January 23 but as he could not arrange the money he consumed rat poison on January 24.

He was soon admitted to a nearby hospital. He died on January 29.
