Belthangady: A partially burnt dead body was found in a gorge on the edge of a rubber plantation at Sorakya near Kanyadi-1 of Nada village here on Monday, December 12.

The body, believed to be a woman, was discovered, after a stench wafting from the area was noticed by the rubber plantation owners when they had gone to bring fodder. Police were informed immediately.

Belthngady police sub-inspector Nanda Kumar M M visited the scene.

Severe burns hamper identification

Identifying the victim has proven difficult as the body has been charred beyond recognition. From the clues, it is suspected that a pile of wood placed on the body was set on fire.

Police suspect the death to be a murder. It is estimated that the death may have occurred about 10 days ago.

SI Nanda Kumar said that the investigation team is looking into missing person complaints received. Information is also being collected from villagers, he said.

There are possibilities that the woman was killed elsewhere and her body was dumped in the remote area, he added.

The body is still left at the spot as the night time hampered operations to collect evidence. The forensic team will reach the spot on Tuesday and thereafter further processes will be initiated, Nanda Kumar added.
