In a recent operation, customs officials at the international airport have intercepted a shocking attempt to smuggle wild animals, including a variety of snakes, concealed within luggage. The incident unfolded on Thursday evening and has raised serious concerns about illegal wildlife trafficking.
A staggering total of 78 animals were discovered during the operation, remarkably still alive despite their perilous journey. Among these animals were 55 ball pythons, showcasing various captivating color variations, and 17 rattlesnakes. Tragically, the operation also revealed the grim fate of 6 capuchin monkeys, which were found lifeless.
This act of smuggling has triggered the enforcement of Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962, which is designed to combat the illicit trade in protected wildlife. Under this legal provision, live animals will be repatriated to their country of origin, ensuring their safety and well-being. As for the deceased animals, they will be disposed of following strict sanitary protocols.
The customs officials have asserted that their investigation into this matter is ongoing. This alarming incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges posed by wildlife trafficking and the vital role of customs authorities in safeguarding our planet’s precious biodiversity.
