Gundlupet (Chamarajanagar): In view of the agitation in Karnataka regarding the Cauvery water issue, restrictions have been placed on the entry of TN-registered vehicles into Karnataka.
As a precautionary measure, the Tamil Nadu government has restricted the entry of TN-registered at the border crossings here. All vehicles from Tamil Nadu traveling through the Kekkanahalla check post in Gundlupet taluk on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, and are being stopped and sent back.
Vehicle traffic at the inter-state border had been closed between 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on September 26. unawares of the closure, many motorists went to the Kekkanahalli check post at the Karnataka border via Gundlupet and had to return. Lorries carrying vegetables bound for Tamil Nadu were parked at a distance of about a km from the check post.
The traffic movement eased after the vehicles from Karnataka were allowed to cross the border into Tamil Nadu after 8:30 a.m.
The Bengaluru bandh called by farmers and Kannada organisations on Tuesday and backed by the BJP and JD(S) in protest against the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu evoked partial response, with most of the public services functioning normally, but fewer people venturing out.
‘Karnataka Jala Samrakshana Samiti,’ an umbrella outfit of farmers’ associations and other organisations led by farmer leader Kuruburu Shanthakumar, has given the call for today’s dawn-to-dusk (6 am to 6 pm) Bengaluru shutdown.
