Bengaluru: Many have complained on social media that the garbage marshals appointed by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike for imposing fines on residents for illicit disposal of garbage are overcharging the fine amount.

As per the BBMP Waste Management Byelaws 2019, if a resident does not segregate wet and dry waste then he/she must be fined Rs 1,000 for the first time and Rs 2,000 for a second violation.

However, some residents have complained that the marshals charge them under the category for non-segregation of waste after a function or public event.

Moreover, many have claimed that the marshals do not have any clarity on the fines for Plastic waste disposal, biomedical waste disposal and smoking in public.

BBMP Special Commissioner (Solid Waste) Randeep said that action will be taken against those marshals who penalise under a different violation. He added that the marshals are further trained in BBMP garbage management byelaws and the amount of fine set for a violation.

From the beginning of June till the end of July, Rs 2.84 crore was collected by the marshals across the city for violations of waste disposal rules. This includes penalties for not wearing a facemask not maintaining social distancing, rules that were initiated after the COVID-19 pandemic.
