Bengaluru: Two persons including an official of the CID office, have been arrested for cheating people by promising government jobs.

Anita (42) from RPC Layout, a section superintendent in the Economic Offenses Division of the Bangalore CID office, and her accomplice Ramachandra Bhat (56), are the accused.

They allegedly took Rs 40 lakh from Sunil, a resident of Kalyananagar, Chikkamagaluru, assuring him of a government job. The police arrested them based on Sunil’s complaint.

In 2021, Sunil was introduced to Ramachandra Bhat through his friend Manjunath. Bhat claimed to know Anita, who had connections with high-ranking officials in the KPSC and the government. He promised Sunil a job and asked for a large sum of money.

It is alleged that Bhat called Sunil to the CID office, where he met Anita. She showed her office and ID card to gain Sunil’s trust. They promised him the post of Assistant Engineer in the Public Works Department and demanded Rs 40 lakh. Sunil paid the money in December 2021 and February 2022, but he never got the job. When he asked for his money back, they threatened him. Sunil then filed a complaint, leading to their arrest.

The police said that the accused had cheated more than Rs 2 crores from many people. They showed their CID ID cards to convince jobseekers, who then paid large amounts of money. Anita took payments only in cash. So far, 8 people have come forward saying Anita cheated them. Many others from Vijayapura, Bagalkote, and Gadag are believed to be victims, but they have not yet complained.

The police are urging anyone who has been cheated to file a complaint at the Vijayanagar police station.
