A 25-year-old man allegedly raped and murdered his girlfriend after he came to know that her parents had finalized her marriage to someone else.
Police said that the accused Manoj, a KP Agrahara resident tried to commit suicide by hanging at his home but was saved and rushed to a hospital. His condition is said to be stable.
Manoj and the victim, identified as Shalini (23) had met two years ago when they were working for different pharmaceutical distributors. At that time Manoj had proposed to Shalini but she rejected him.
Later Manoj quit his job and took up a job as a writer-accountant for a road contractor.
About a year ago, the duo got in touch over social media and began dating. Recently Manoj came to know about Shalini’s engagement with some other person.
Angry over the issue, Manoj sneaked into her house on Tuesday evening after confirming she was alone. He later picked up a fight with her over her marriage and demanded that she marry him. When Shalini refused, the accused raped her and then smothered her to death with a pillow. He then fled the scene and later tried to commit suicide at his house.
Police have booked Manoj for rape and murder and are awaiting his discharge from the hospital to arrest him.
