Bengaluru: Man steals gold to fund his gambling addiction, arrested

Bengaluru: Sampangiramanagar police arrested a person accused of stealing gold jewelry from an acquaintance’s house.
The arrested is identified as Mohanlal (32), a resident of Nagarthpet. Police seized gold jewelry weighing around 1.399 kg and one gold bar valued at Rs 84 lakhs from his possession.
During the questioning, it was revealed that the accused used the proceeds from his theft to gamble in casinos and betting on cricket apps.
The complainant Ramlal and the accused both hailed from Rajasthan and had been involved in the gold business for many years. Mohanlal used to purchase and sell gold to Ramlal.
Last year, the accused bought 2.931 kilograms of gold from Ramlal and payment for the same was overdue. On October 25, the accused visited Ramlal’s house to discuss a business issue. He managed to steal 155 grams of gold placed in the cupboard when Ramlal excused himself to go the the washroom.
The theft came to light when Ramlal checked the cupboard and noticed that the gold was missing. He checked the CCTV footage and noticed that Mohanlal was holding a packet while leaving the house. Later he filed a case at Sampangiramanagar police station.
Based on his complaint, a team of police personnel led by Harish Kumar and PSI Aralan Gowda, Sivakumar conducted an operation and arrested the accused.
Police investigation revealed that Mohanlal had sold the gold he bought from Ramlal and lost over Rs 2 crore in gambling and betting activities. Out of greed, to recover the lost money he committed the theft and planned to use it for gambling.
