Bengaluru: Karnataka witnessed record-breaking alcohol sales on Saturday, with liquor and beer worth ₹408.53 crore sold across the state, according to B. Govindaraju, General Secretary of the Federation of Wine Merchants’ Association of Karnataka.
Providing details, Govindaraju stated that daily alcohol sales typically average ₹100 crore. However, due to the state holiday declared on December 27 following the demise of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, liquor purchases were not possible. On December 28, Karnataka State Beverages Corporation Limited (KSBCL) opened depots and extended credit facilities to liquor licensees, leading to the surge in sales.
Approximately ₹150 crore in credit facilities were availed by licensees, with the excise department and KSBCL enabling these transactions even on the holiday. The association expressed gratitude to the authorities for their cooperation.
The record sales included 6,22,062 cases of whisky and other spirits, along with 4,04,998 cases of beer, totaling 10,27,060 cases. Whisky and spirits accounted for ₹327.50 crore, while beer sales amounted to ₹80.58 crore. This marks an unprecedented one-day sales record in the state.
