Kodigehalli police have arrested six members of the notorious Irani gang for their involvement in multiple theft cases.
The arrested have been identified as Tabrez Ali, Madhush, Ali Siraj, Sadiq Rafique Khan, Abbas Ali, and Abu Turab. The gang was found in possession of 450 grams of stolen gold jewelry worth Rs 28.50 lakh.
Their arrest has led to the resolution of 13 theft cases, including five house burglaries and a chain-snatching incident under Kodigehalli police jurisdiction. Additional cases were linked to Bagalur, Amruthahalli, Sanjaynagar, RT Nagar, Whitefield, Kadugodi, and Varthur police stations.
The gang used to target lone women, snatch their belongings and conduct robberies at locked houses.
In one of the cases, a resident of Kodigehalli Main Road had traveled to Rajasthan with his family. Upon their return, they found that their house had been broken into and 30 grams of gold jewelry and two silver lamps were stolen.
In another case, a woman returning home from a temple was targeted by two gang members on a bike. They followed her and snatched her 30-gram gold mangalsutra before fleeing.
Kodigehalli police examined CCTV footage and used technical surveillance to track down one of the suspects near Chintamani Circle in Kolar. Upon interrogation, he confessed to being involved in the chain-snatching incident. Further investigation led to the arrest of his five accomplices, who had also committed house burglaries.
Based on the gang’s confessions, police recovered 145 grams of stolen gold from a jeweler in Andhra Pradesh, and another 127 grams from a jewelry store in Madanapalle. Additionally, 178 grams of gold kept with their associates were also confiscated.
The gang members operated from Hindupur, Madanapalle, and Kalkiri, frequently traveling to Bengaluru on motorcycles. They would stay in the city for two to three days, targeting lone pedestrians and burglarizing locked houses before escaping back to their hometowns in Andhra Pradesh. The Iranian gang has been active in multiple states, and their presence in Bengaluru has once again raised concerns.
Police Commissioner B. Dayananda urged residents to be cautious while leaving their homes unattended and advised women to remain alert while wearing gold jewelry in public places, as such criminals constantly look for opportunities to strike.
