Cybercrime networks are operating under various guises, with a new fraud scheme using the name “Meesho” joining their ranks. This scam recently targeted G.M. Mustafa, a businessman from Nekkilady, but he narrowly escaped due to his vigilance. Mustafa has shared his experience to raise public awareness about such frauds.

Mustafa received a registered post addressed to his wife. Upon opening it, he found a letter claiming to be from “Meesho,” stating that the company was celebrating its 8th anniversary by holding a lucky draw for registered customers, with 20 attractive prizes, including three major ones. The letter instructed recipients to scratch the card enclosed and, if they won, to send certain documents to a given WhatsApp number for verification.

The documents requested included a government-issued ID. Mustafa scratched the card and found it indicated he had won the first prize of Rs 14,51,000 in cash. Despite suspecting it was a scam, he sent the card to the scammers. In response, he was asked to send Rs 501 and an official government ID.

Recognizing this as a fraudulent scheme, Mustafa refrained from sending any money or ID. He explained that had he sent the requested Rs 501 and his ID card, the scammers would have likely drained his bank account. Mustafa highlighted that women are often targeted by such scams.

Mustafa emphasized that many people might think sending Rs 501 is a small amount and comply, thereby falling into the trap. Scammers use various tactics to deceive people, making it crucial to remain cautious at every step. He urged everyone to be vigilant and avoid falling prey to such fraudulent schemes.
