Bird Flue: Mysuru Zoo will remain shut until Feb 02

Mysuru: Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Mysuru will remain shut from January 04 to February 02, 2017 as the birds of the zoo have been found infected with Avian Influenza (H5N8). To prevent the spread the H5N8 to the people and other animals of the zoo the zoo authorities have decided to close the zoo for nearly a month.
For the time being, strict bio-security measures are in place at the zoo premises. As per the recommendations of the meeting of the zoo officials, it has been decided to close the zoo for the safety of public health and zoo animals of Mysuru zoo.
On December 28 last year, a Spot Billed Pelican and three Greylag Goose were died in Ponds at Mysuru zoo premises. The samples of the dead birds were sent to Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals, Bengaluru. On December 30, another Spot Billed Pelican and a Greylag Goose were died in the same pond. The carcasses were sent to IAH and VB, Bengaluru for further investigation. The dead birds were migratory and free ranging birds.
On Tuesday, the zoo officials received a report of National Institute of High Security and Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Government of Karnataka, that Avian Influenza (H5N8) is confirmed in free ranging and migratory birds died at Mysuru Zoo premises.
