Belthangady: State Fire Brigade and Emergency Services DIG Ravi D Chennannavar, on Monday, took stock of the situation at manufacturing unit of ‘Solid Fire Works’, where an explosion claimed lives of 3 workers.

The tragic explosion occurred at Solid Fire Works’ manufacturing unit in Goliyangadi Kadthyaru of Kukkedi Gram Panchayat under the jurisdiction of Venur Police Station, leaving three factory workers dead. The incident, which took place on Sunday evening, has prompted a comprehensive investigation.

The victims have been identified as Varghese (69) from Thrissur, Kerala, Chetan A U (27) from Annanaikanahalli, Hassan, and Swami alias Narayan K (56) from Kairadi Kurumbur, Palakkad. Bodies of two of the victims were blown to pieces due to the severity of the explosion. DNA tests are likely to be conducted before handing them over to their families.

Umesh, the father of Chetan, said that his son called home on Sunday morning and that the family had learned about his demise through TV.

Possible causes:

According to sources, the explosion is suspected to be caused by the presence of excess gunpowder, exceeding the licensed capacity of 15 kg. Samples have been collected, and more than 85 materials, including raw firecrackers, charcoal, sulfur, and aluminum powder, were found at the site.

The investigation suggests the likelihood of the explosion being triggered by the excessive stock of gunpowder. No traces of gelatin were found, and forensic experts are analyzing the collected samples to determine the exact cause.

Owner Arrested:

Meanwhile, Syed Basheer, the owner of Solid Fire Works, has been arrested following a complaint filed at Venur police station. Another individual, Kiran, involved in making incendiary at the unit, has also been detained.

Safety Concerns and Previous Raid:

A week prior to the incident, Venur Police Station officers conducted a raid on the site, highlighting the lack of fire safety precautions. The warehouse, constructed with common stone and cement sheet instead of solid material, raises concerns about adherence to safety regulations.

Government Response:

In response to the tragedy, additional district magistrate Dr Anand K has issued a directive temporarily suspending licenses for all fireworks manufacturing units across Dakshina Kannada district. This precautionary measure, under the Explosives Act of 1984 and Rule 107 of Explosive Rules 2008, aims to re-examine safety protocols.

This suspension will remain in effect until further orders.
