B’luru: Rowdy-sheeter, accused of rape, escapes from police custody

‎Bengaluru:‎‎ A 22-year-old rowdy sheeter accused of raping a woman, escaped from police custody as he was being taken back from a medical examination.

The rowdy sheeter, Awez, is a wanted criminal with 18 serious cases relating to murder, attempt to murder, extortion, and death threats among others. He had been taken to the Bowring Hospital for a medical examination after his arrest in a rape case.

However, while returning to the police station after completing the medical examination, he pushed the police constables who were escorting him, jumped off the police jeep, and escaped from the spot.

According to police, Awez had waylaid a Nepali woman who was walking on the street in DJ Halli police station limits in the early hours of Thursday, March 31 and sexually assaulted the woman. After hearing the woman’s cries, the locals had gotten hold of Awez and thrashed him, and handed him over to the Hoysala unit. The police arrested him soon after. He had been taken for medical examination in the case.

DCP (East) Bhimashankar Guled said that a special team has been registered to trace Awez’s whereabouts and arrest him at the earliest. Departmental action has been initiated against the two police personnel who escorted him to the hospital, he added.
