A thief who broke into a house while the residents were present and stole gold ornaments worth lakhs and thousands of rupees in cash has been arrested by the Shankarapura police.
The accused, identified as Afridi (32), a resident of Shankarapura, was apprehended in connection with the burglary that took place on September 28.
The incident occurred around 4 PM at the residence of Sameer R. Katti on Uttaradimath Road in Basavanagudi. Afridi reportedly entered the house and stole 20 grams of gold and ₹67,500 in cash before fleeing. Based on a complaint filed by the victim, the police registered a case and launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of the accused.
On the day of the burglary, it was Ekadashi, and Sameer’s mother and her friend were engaged in Rama Bhajans in the kitchen. Sameer was in his room on the first floor. Taking advantage of the situation, Afridi entered the house and made his way into Sameer’s father’s room, where the latter was asleep.
The thief stole a mobile phone, ₹67,500 in cash, a 12-gram gold ring, and an 8-gram gold coin from the room. He then fled the scene. However, his movements were captured on the home’s CCTV cameras, which became crucial evidence in the investigation.
South Zone DCP Lokesh Jagalasar has issued a public advisory urging residents to ensure their doors and windows are securely locked at all times, whether during the day or at night. He also recommended that those leaving their homes unattended for extended periods inform the police for added security.
The Shankarapura police are continuing their investigation into the case.
