B’luru: Thieves in realtor’s house robbery arrested; Nearly Rs 2 crore “unaccounted cash” seized

Bengaluru: The arrest of two thieves by the Kumaraswamy layout police for allegedly robbing the house of real estate businessman Sandeep Lal has left many questions unanswered.

Police said that they have confiscated Rs 1.8 crores in cash, 190gram jewelry worth Rs 12 lakhs from the accused, identified as Sunil Kumar alias Thore (35) of Subrahmanyapura and Dileep (23) of Kebbehalli in Bengaluru.

It has come to light that the victim, Sandeep Lal, had only said that about 2 lakh in cash were stolen. However, the actual money stolen by the accused was around Rs 2 crores, police said.

The confiscation of this huge cash has landed the realtor in soup. Now the case has been reported to ED and the Income Tax departments. Sandeep, meanwhile, has been asked to reveal the source of the cash, sources said.

Case details

Sunil and Dileep, who worked as auto drivers, were not new to the world of crime. They had been previously jailed for theft, possession of drugs, and extortion. Both became friends while serving jail time. After being released from jail both struck a deal to work together, sources said.

Sunil had seen Sandeep Lal giving his father several bundles of currency notes while dropping a passenger to Kumaraswamy Layout. Enticed by the cash, Sunil and Dileep hatched a plan to rob the house.

After recceing the house for a while, the duo decided to strike it rich on March 28, when Sandeep had gone to Chennai. They both broke into the house and loot the valuables. They were disappointed to find only 190 grams of gold even after searching the house for over an hour.

But, luck smiled on them, when they checked the two bundles wrapped in cloth sheets tucked over a cupboard. They were in shock and awe to find wads of cash in the bundles. They fled the spot with the haul and a foreign liquor bottle found in the house for celebrating their success, sources added.

The accused had spent the cash on paying off their debts and buying expensive gifts for family members.

Police said the accused were caught based on the fingerprints found at the crime scene. The finger print s matched with those taken during their earlier arrest.
