Kumaraswamy Layout police arrested a 27-year-old woman for allegedly stealing gold chains from women at crowded temple festivals and public gatherings.
The accused, identified as Subhadra hails from Ezhabakkam, Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu. Police recovered 125 grams of gold worth Rs 9 lakh from her.
Subhadra was part of a gang that included her grandmother and four other women, who are currently on the run. The gang was known for attending major religious and cultural events across Bengaluru and other districts, where they would take advantage of crowded situations to snatch gold chains from women and disappear within moments.
During the investigation, police found that the gang strategically operated at different locations. The breakthrough came when a woman residing in Pragatipura Layout filed a complaint at Kumaraswamy Layout police station, reporting that her 70-gram gold mangalsutra was stolen at Banashankari Temple on January 13.
Police reviewed CCTV footage from the temple premises, identifying Subhadra as the suspect. A technical investigation led to her arrest. During interrogation, she revealed that she came to Bengaluru with her grandmother and that the other gang members were known to her grandmother, not her. She also admitted to stealing two other gold chains, which were handed over to a friend in Tamil Nadu’s Salem district. Police are continuing their investigation to trace the remaining members of the gang.
