B’luru: Woman lawyer arrested in baby selling racket

Police on Saturday arrested a 41-year-old woman advocate for her involvement in a baby-selling racket.
The advocate Bhanumathi K P, 41, had been evading arrest for some time now.
Basavanagudi police had busted the racket in October last year and arrested five people, including two women in connection with the case at that time.
The gang had sold around 13 infants to childless couples after buying them from their biological parents.
As per police information, Bhanumati would visit hospitals and gather details about childless couples by stating that she would assist them in legally adopting kids.
However, instead of offering any assistance with adoption formalities, Bhanumati would convince the couples to buy a child and then prepare “legal” agreements between the buyer and the seller.
The others arrested in the case are Mahesh Kumar, 50, of Kathriguppe, Dhanalakshmi, 30, of Mallasandra near Jalahalli, Janardhan alias Janardhanan, 33, of Erode in Tamil Nadu, and Ranjana Devidas Kandagale, 32, of Maharashtra. One of the accused, identified as Rathna, is no more.
