BMTC converts decommissioned bus into dining cars!

Bengaluru: Continuing the trend of repurposing old buses, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has transformed one of its retired vehicles into an innovative “canteen.” Following the footsteps of KSRTC, which turned old buses into high-tech women’s toilets, BMTC now introduces dining carts made from its decommissioned buses.
The converted bus, now serving as canteens, aims to provide a convenient dining space for BMTC staff.
Equipped with seating, tables, fans, washbasins, ventilation, and lighting systems, the canteens offer a pleasant dining experience. The exterior, painted in blue, bears the inscription, ‘Dining Cart – Let’s sit and have a meal,’ welcoming staff to enjoy their meals.
Operated as stationary units, these food carts do not travel but serve as fixed canteens at various BMTC depots. The first dining car, located at the central unit of Dasanapura, is now operational. If successful, BMTC plans to replicate this model across other locations.
BMTC officials are considering introducing these canteens initially at Peenya or Yeshwantpur depots. While leasing options are under consideration, the primary focus remains on providing meals and snacks for BMTC staff.
BMTC Managing Director R. Ramachandran commended the technical staff for their skills in converting the buses into functional canteens. He encourages such innovative endeavors to enhance the services offered by the organization.
