Boatman saves a senior citizen who had jumped into the river

Savanuru: An elderly woman, who had jumped into the river to commit suicide was rescued and brought to the shore by a boatman at Kadeshivalaya on Thursday morning. The victim is identified as Manjakka, a resident of Ramakunja in Kadaba taluk, who attempted to take the extreme step by jumping into a river near Uppinangady.

A boatman identified as Abbas noticed the woman being washed away in the river current near Kadeshivalaya and he immediately attempted to rescue her. However, it is learnt that when the Abbas approached her, the woman apparently requested him to not to save her as she was attempting to kill herself. Nonetheless, Abbas managed to rescue her and bring her to the shore.

The elderly woman has suffered minor injuries and is out of danger.

I saw something floating in the river, when I was waiting for people to board the boat at around 8 am. I saw a woman sinking in river and I rowed my boat towards her. She was being carried away in the strong water current. I rescued her and the person named Keshava helped me to bring her up. Uppinangady police were informed subsequently, who visited the spot and took Manjakka with them – Abbas, the boatman
