Brahmavara – Death in police custody: Family alleges suspicions, demands thorough investigation; CID probe begins

Cherkadi: The family of Biju Yohann (45), a native of Kollam, Kerala, who was arrested on charges of harassing a woman in Cherkadi, has lodged a formal complaint following his custodial death.
Biju’s family raised suspicions about the circumstances of his death claiming that there were visible injuries on his body. They have requested a thorough investigation to seek justice.
Leaders from the Kerala Cultural and Social Association have also called for a transparent inquiry.
Biju Yohann had recently joined a factory in Hangarakatte as a worker and was residing in a rented house in Cherkadi Soorebetta.
A woman living nearby accused Biju of harassing her and lodged a complaint with Brahmavar Police following which he was taken into custody on Saturday night. Later around 3:45 a.m. police noticed him sitting unresponsive near the wall and took him to a nearby Community Health Center, but was declared dead on arrival.
Two officers suspended
The Udupi District Superintendent of Police ordered the suspension of Brahmavar Police Sub-Inspector Madhu B.I. and Head Constable Sujatha in connection with the custodial death. An investigation has been initiated into the matter.
CID team begins probe
A CID team from Bengaluru arrived on Monday to collect information and investigate the incident. The team visited Brahmavar Police Station to gather details, met with medical professionals at the Community Health Center, and examined the deceased’s body as part of their inquiry.
