Brahmavara: Man arrested on molestation charges dies in police custody

A man, who was arrested on accusation of molestation died under suspicious circumstances in police custody early on Sunday morning, November 10, at Brahmavara Police Station.

The accused, Biju Mohan (45), hailing from Kollam, Kerala had recently joined a fishing factory in Hangarakatte as a worker and had been residing in a rented house at Cherkadi Surebetta. He was arrested by the Brahmavara Police on Saturday night around 8 PM, following allegations of harassing a woman and her children who lived in a nearby house.

Based on a complaint from the victim, Biju was taken into police custody and placed in the lock-up. However, at 3:45 AM on Sunday, police found him sitting against the wall of his cell, unresponsive. He was rushed to the nearby Community Health Centre, but was declared dead on arrival.

Biju is survived by his wife and two children.

Authorities have stated that a thorough investigation will be conducted into the incident. Since the death occurred while the accused was in police custody, the case will be handled as a “lock-up death” and will be investigated by the Crime Investigation Department (CID). Two teams will conduct a post-mortem examination, and all legal procedures, including video documentation, will be followed as part of the investigation, according to Dr. Arun K., SP, Udupi.

The relatives of the deceased have been informed, and further legal actions will be taken based on their statement.
