Bus Fare Hike: Understand intent first, says Khader

Mangaluru: Indirectly supporting the state government’s decision to increase bus fares, Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader advised opposition parties to discuss the intentions behind such moves rather than opposing them outright. He stated that the government always prioritizes public welfare while implementing various policies.

Speaking to the press here on Friday, Khader addressed questions about the government’s decision not to establish new goshalas. He remarked, “I refrain from making political comments. This scheme was announced during the previous government. How many goshalas were established, and where are they located in the district?”

Cattle Slaughter Ban Dates Back to Indira Gandhi’s Era

Responding to MLA Harish Poonja’s questions on the rights of cows, Khader clarified that the cattle slaughter ban law was introduced during Indira Gandhi’s tenure as Prime Minister. “It was a nationwide law, not state-specific or election-driven,” he added.

Khader expressed disappointment in Poonja’s comments regarding elephants in the Assembly. “I had told him that elephants too have the right to live in that contest, that’s why he has now raised questions about cows. It’s unfortunate that leaders like Poonja are unaware that cows too have the right to live. I will send him a detailed explanation of rights for all living beings,” Khader quipped.

New DC Office Complex to Open on Jan 17

Khader announced that the construction of the new Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner’s office complex in Padil is nearly complete. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to inaugurate it during his visit on January 17.

Inspecting the final stages of the project on Friday, Khader emphasized the need to complete all pending works before the inauguration. The complex is expected to set a benchmark in the country and will be the largest DC office in the state.

Most government departments, except rural development, will operate under one roof, eliminating the need for citizens to visit multiple offices. It will also facilitate seamless meetings for officials, saving time. The relocation of offices will commence immediately after the inauguration, Khader said.

MLC Manjunath Bhandari, Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan, Additional DC Dr. Santosh Kumar, Assistant Commissioner Harshavardhan, and Smart City officials were present during the inspection.
