Byndoor: In a surprising twist, the burnt car found with a charred body inside at Henberu here turned out to be a murder inspired by the Malayalam crime-thriller movie ‘Kurup’.

Taking inspiration from the movie, a man from Karkala with help from his aides allegedly carried out the murder to evade punishment in a court trial by faking death, police said.

The charred body found was identified to be Anand Devadiga (60), a mason by profession. Sadananda Sherigar (52) plaaned and executed the killing to evade jail in a cheating case. Shilpa Poojary (30), Satish Devadiga (49) and Nitin Devadiga (35) were his accomplices, police added.

As per police, Sadananda Sherigar, who worked as a surveyor, was battling a court case accusing him of cheating and issuing fake survey documents. He feared that he could be jailed.

As an avid crime-thriller buff, Sadananda decided to evade jail by getting himself declared dead, in the same fashion as the protagonist of ‘Kurup’ that is based on the life of wanted criminal Sukumara Kurup. He planned to kill Anand who looked similar to him.

To put it into action, Sadananda joined hands with his lover Shilpa and lured Anand for carnal pleasures. He was made to drink alcohol and given a sleeping pill in the guise of ‘Viagra’. Once he was passed out, Sadananda and Shilpa took him in his Ford Ikon car to Byndoor. Satish and Nitin followed them in another car.

Once reaching the deserted spot, they locked Anand in the car, doused it with petrol, set it on fire, and fled from the spot.

As the car was completely burnt, Police had little clues to solve the mystery. A search of the car’s engine chassis number revealed that it belonged to Sadananda, who was missing since the incident. But, the CCTV footage from Sasthan toll gate proved to be the game changer. Shilpa was seen getting down from the car and paying the toll.

Police continued the investigation based on this crucial clue and unearthed the murder plot. All the accused have been arrested, police said.
