Tensions are running high as various organizations have called for a Bengaluru bandh in protest against the release of Kaveri river water to Tamil Nadu.
While the official announcement of the bandh is pending, large-scale demonstrations took place in Mandya, Maddur, Bengaluru, and its outskirts on Saturday, expressing outrage at the government’s decision to divert Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
In the midst of the protests in Bengaluru, former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddiyurappa, Basavaraj Bommai, and other prominent leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were detained by the police.
Activist Vatal Nagaraj is expected to lead the formal announcement of the bandh, with numerous organizations already pledging their support to the cause.
A significant protest march is being organized, set to stretch from Town Hall to Freedom Park during the planned bandh. Additionally, some organizations have advocated for the bandh to be observed on Monday, September 25.
