CEN police station to relocate to Bantwal

The Cyber, Economic, and Narcotics (CEN) Police Station, currently operating in Mangaluru under the Dakshina Kannada district jurisdiction, is set to be relocated to Bantwal.

This move aims to make it more accessible for rural residents to file complaints related to cyber crimes, economic offenses, and narcotics cases.

Easing accessibility for rural areas

Presently, victims of cyber crimes from remote areas such as Sullia, Puttur, Belthangady, Kadaba, and Bantwal must travel to Mangaluru to lodge complaints. This inconvenience often discourages victims from reporting minor incidents. With the relocation, it is expected that more people will come forward to report such crimes due to the proximity of the station.

Preserving and renovating heritage building

The CEN Police Station, currently operating from a rented building in Mangaluru, will be shifted to a renovated heritage structure near the Bantwal Town Police Station. The British-era building, formerly a jail, features a traditional tiled roof and antique design. The department has decided to retain its historical essence while modernizing it for police operations.

The renovation, costing approximately Rs 35 lakh, is being overseen by the Nirmithi Kendra in Mangaluru. The restoration includes repairs to the roof, construction of a veranda supported by eight pillars, and preservation of the building’s original style. Separate cells, offices for the DySP, inspectors, PSIs, and staff, along with a reception and restroom facilities, are part of the upgrade.

Adequate staffing and facilities

The CEN Police Station will have a dedicated team of 25 personnel, including a DySP, an inspector, and PSIs. Currently, the Bantwal Town Police Inspector, Ananthapadmanabha, has additional responsibility for the CEN station. The relocation is expected to ease the workload and enhance operational efficiency.

SP’s inspection and timeline

Dakshina Kannada SP, Yathish N., has inspected the site and provided guidance for the ongoing renovation. The project is expected to take seven to eight months to complete, as stated by Nirmithi Kendra Engineer Naveenchandra.

The move promises improved convenience for rural residents and reinforces efforts to address the increasing instances of cyber and related crimes in Dakshina Kannada.
