Mangaluru: The DPR process will be completed soon for the creation of a modern Central Market in the city under the ‘Smart City’ scheme. Under the leadership of the DC, the traders in the building now would have to be temporarily moved elsewhere, for which some places have been identified,” said U.T. Khader, Minister for Urban Development and Housing on Friday.

Mr. Khader was speaking at a meeting with traders conducted at the District Commissioner’s office on the topic of renovation of the Central Market at State Bank under the ‘Smart City’ initiative.

The minister said that the Central Market must be constructed not on the model of Singapore or Hong Kong, instead it should be constructed to face the rain, wind and environment of Mangaluru and to be feasible for the traders. Only after alternative facility is provided within or outside the city for the traders in the market, will the next step be taken, he said.

Solar Energy

The consultant of the mission spoke during the meeting and said that concept plan of the new Central Market will include a sewage treatment plant, a bio-digester, a cold storage facility and roof-top solar panels among the additional amenities mooted in the plan.

The plan also includes parking facility for 583 cars and 146 motor bikes and 596 shops for vegetable, fruit, meat and fish markets within in the same building. The expected time for the market to come up is three years and the structure will cover around 3.60 acres.
