Central-state joint projects on hold?

Udupi: In this time’s legislative assembly elections, though BJP gained a higher amount of seats it was unable to form the state government and has caused unhappiness to the people of Karavali from the point view of local development.

12 BJP MLA’s (Of the 13 constituencies) have been elected from the coastal Karnataka and when B.S.Yeddyurappa accepted the position of chief minister on May 17th, led to a lot of happiness throughout coastal Karnataka. But, Yeddyurappa’s resignation within three days from the position of CM has caused lot unhappiness to the people.

Why BJP government was required?

Till date, whenever BJP government was formed in the state the union government would be of a different party or when there was BJP led government in the union the state government would be of a different political party. Only this time, there was chance for formation of governments at state and centre by the same party. Because of this, a hope rose amongst the people from Karavali that many projects that were on the back burner in this region would receive a much required boost.

Lack of integration

When the state and central governments belong to different parties, it creates a lack of integration, cooperation, rise and fall in dependability which altogether hurt the development works like an axe chopping off the wood. It also becomes the reason for delay in implementation of the plans. This directly slows down the development work of the local region. In 2008, there were more number of MLA’s from Karavali and though the state government was of the BJP, the government at the centre was led by the UPA. Hence, the plans did not get implemented effectively. Since 2013, the state government was led by Congress but the union government was BJP which again led to the same gridlock. Hence, the local people are terrified to see the new repeat development of different party at the state and centre leading to the lack of integration between the government’s causing adverse effect on development.

Projects costing 8,000 crore rupees

6-7 centre-state government projects for Karavali which should have been progressing on full speed and currently limping. The total cost of these projects is estimated to be more than 8,000 crore rupees of which a some projects are on the reports and survey level and the other projects have not been implemented based on various reasons. Most of the works from these projects are related to basic utilities and infrastructure which is essential for the growth of the coast.

The different projects

  • Mangaluru-Raichuru corridor under Bharat Mala Project.
  • Four laning of Shiradi Ghat road (Green Bypass through 7 tunnels and 6 bridges) under Sagar Mala Project.
  • Moodbidri-Mangaluru four lane road.
  • International standard Mangaluru railway station.
  • Formation of Mangaluru railway division.
  • Fishermen Jetty creation at Kulai.

Smart City Project

  • Mangaluru outer ring road.
  • A direct connection road between Mangaluru old port and new port.
  • Bunder development at Malpe and Hejmady.
  • Four lane road between Aadi Udupi and Teerthahalli.

Skybus for Mangaluru?

Hope is there in the sorrow of the people as the new JD(S)-Congress coalition government’s chief minister candidate H.D.Kumaraswamy accepts says his oath and accepts his position.

In 2008, when Yeddyurappa was the chief minister, he had announced that a feasibility study for the functioning of monorail project in coastal Karnataka’s prominent cities of Mangaluru and Udupi will be taken. There were a lot of expectation on this and the The Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) had expressed happiness on its being feasible.  The people of Karavali expected that at least now the monorail project might come into existence. Now, before that when H.D.Kumaraswamy was the chief minister he had spoken about Mangaluru skybus project. The citizens of Karavali now wonder if at least this time, the project might turn true.
