Central team examines rain-related losses in DK dist

Mangaluru: A three-member central team, on day two of their visit to assess the rain-related losses in the district visited Mangaluru, Bantwal, Puttur and Sullia on Thursday.
The team, headed by Bhartendu Kumar Singh, deputy secretary, Union ministry of finance along with Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil toured the rain-affected areas and gathered information on the losses to the infrastructure, crop and properties among other things here.
The team visited the Thumbe dam to examine the collapsed retaining wall adjacent to the new-vented dam. Later they visited the Mularpatna Bridge and gathered information on the alternative routes drawn up the district administration for the public following the bridge’s collapse.
Similarly, they examined other areas impacted by the landslides including the Bengaluru-Mangaluru road stretch at Shiradi Ghats before proceeding towards Hassan. Apart from this, they gathered information on the losses suffered by areca nut cultivators owing to the fruit rot disease.
Meanwhile, the central team has assured the district administration of providing an accurate report on the rain-related losses in the district. A preliminary report submitted by the district administration to the state government has estimated losses to the extent of Rs 213 crore.
