Chennai: ‘No Muslim Staff’ ad lands bakery owner in jail

Chennai: An owner of a bakery in Chennai landed in trouble for an advertisement claiming none of their staff was Muslim.
The owner of “Jain Bakeries & Confectioneries” located at Chennai’s Mahalakshmi Street in T. Nagar was arrested on Saturday, hours after an image of the board put outside the bakery stating “Made by Jains on orders, No Muslim staffs” vent viral on social media.
Amid massive criticism for the communal ad, the bakery staff clarified that the board had been displayed in the backdrop of rumours being spread on WhatsApp, urging people not to buy bakery products made by Muslims. The ad was “not intended to communalise” and had been put up only after several customers called to inquire if the shop had any Muslim staff member
Mambalam police registered a case under section 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and section 504 of the IPC (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) against the owner.
