A 10-year-old girl died of burn injuries after being set ablaze by her mother in order to prove her fidelity to her husband.

Police have arrested the 38-year-old woman Jayalakshmi and her husband Padmanabhan. According to the police, Padmanabhan suspected his wife’s fidelity and would pick fight with her.

On Sunday night, a verbal argument ensued between them and Padmanabhan dared her to prove her fidelity by setting her 10-year-old girl on fire saying the fire would leave Pavithra unharmed if Jayalakshmi was innocent.

Jayalakshmi then went into the room where Pavitra was sleeping with her step-sisters, dragged her out, and set her ablaze. Alerted by the girl’s screams, neighbours rushed to their house and rushed her to the hospital where she passed away.
