Surat: A 38-year-old businessman from Chikkamagaluru was defrauded of Rs 2 lakhs by a bride and others within hours of their marriage.
Ankit Jain had found a match for him, Swati Bhatt, from a marriage broker, Satish Patel, based in the city here.
Jain was demanded to pay Rs 1.7 lakhs to the girl’s brother Hitesh Trivedi by Patel along with his commission of Rs 20,000.
Jain agreed to the demand and arrived in Surat on June 4 with his mother who gifted her soon-to-be daughter-in-law a gold finger ring and silver anklets worth more than Rs 20,000.
Jain and Bhatt got married in a temple near Kapodra on the banks of the Tapi river.
After the wedding ceremony, when Jain and Bhatt were going to Jain’s uncle’s house in the city, they stopped for refreshments.
Bhatt left for the toilet and did not return after a long time. After a search Jain called Trivedi but the calls were not answered so he called the broker, Patel.
Patel arrived at the spot asked Jain and his mother to search the place again for Bhatt while he will go to Trivedi’s house to get him.
However, later, even calls to Patel went unanswered and that’s when Jain realised that he has been deceived.
Jain lodged a complaint at Varachha police station on Saturday night.
