Chikkamagaluru: The cybercrime, economic offences, and narcotics (CEN) officials have arrested two people for conning a man from Shivamogga by promising to buy a precious gem from him and then decamping with it.
Police officials have recovered an ancient gem worth between Rs 50 lakh and 1 crore. The gem is a 510.60 carat certified, cat eye gemstone.
As per the complaint, the gemstone was gifted by a member of the royal family to the victim. The accused reportedly cheated the man by promising to buy the gem from him but later fled with it.
The accused gang has now been arrested and cops claim that the gang was involved in several crimes including the circulation of fake currency notes.
In October 2020, Chikkamagaluru police had arrested a gang of people involved with the circulation of counterfeit currency notes and fake notes worth Rs 5.5 lakh, vehicles, and equipments were seized.
A case was registered in Aldur police station. On the basis of information gathered in this case, Mangaluru city police had arrested a few other accused belonging to the same gang and recovered fake notes worth Rs 2.4 lakh.
The city police team led by police inspector A K Rakshith from Mangaluru arrested two main accused who were absconding.
