- Second city in the state to get high-tech street lamps
- Rs. 80 lakh project
- 48 poles in 1.3kms
- 8 alternating colours in 2 minutes
Mangaluru: A latest form of street lamps known as the ‘Double Conical Pole’ have been installed along the concrete road connecting Kankanady with Nandigudda. The specialty is that, other than Belgavi city, Mangaluru is the only other city in the state where these high-tech street lamps have been installed.
48 double conical pole street lamps have been installed along the 1.3km long road from Kankanady’s Fr.Muller’s circle via Valencia and Jeppu Seminary to Koti Chennaya circle at Nandigudda. These street lamps are different from other street lamp and glow in different colours. Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has spent about Rs. 80 lakh on this project.
Double Conical Pole
Double conical pole have been installed on the divider between the roads. Two poles arise from a single base. LED lights have been installed which light either sides of the road from the divider and are very attractive to see.
Multi coloured lights
There is a multi-coloured pole between the double conical pole. The lights in it change colour 8 times in 2 minutes. During midnight, even if the main lights switch off, the multi coloured lights in the middle will keep lighting. Thus it indicates the road for the late night riders.
Impediments during road development
Many years back, there were huge trees on either sides of the road. But, for road development, most of the trees were chopped down and the action attracted much protest. Later, after many talks, the church, houses and stores gave land to facilitate the development. Since four years, after the remaining trees were felled, work is being done on the construction of drainage, footpath, bus bay and the concrete road.
Power saving
Since the double conical pole street lamps have been equipped with LED lights it helps in power saving. These have been installed on an experimental basis on only one road. Based on the public response and the maintenance, steps will be taken for similar installation in other parts of the city.
Action for model road
“Already most of the people near Jeppu have given land for road widening and development works are progressing. The double conical pole street lamps have been installed at the cost of Rs. 80 lakh. Discussions will be held for similar installation on other roads in the future,” informed Praveen Chandra Alva, corporator.
