Udupi: Coast Guard personnel rescued over nine persons on board two fishing vessels – Ganga Ganesh and Swarnajyothi Boat after they got stranded at sea.

While Ganga Ganesh fishing boat had departed from Malpe on October 19, Swarnajyothi Boat had set sail from Vasco in, Goa.

Noticing that Swarna Jyothi Boat was stranded after developing technical problems, crew members of Ganga Ganesh rushed to its rescue. However, the anchor rope of the stranded boat got entangled in the propellor of Ganga Ganesh boat and it stopped functioning.

Meanwhile, Swarna Jyothi Boat started drifting in the water after its anchor got cut and sent SOS to other boats. On October 26, ‘Hariharadhan’ a Kochi-bound boat came to their rescue. Since one person on board Swarna Jyothi needed medical assistance on an urgent basis a life jacket was thrown for him into the water. However, another crew member of the stranded ship jumped into the water to catch hold of the life jacket and went missing.

The Coast guard was intimated of this and reached the spot at night and rescued the stranded fishermen. The sick crew member was sent to Kochi by Hariharadhan boat. It was while searching for the missing fisherman that coast guard came across Ganga Ganesh boat that was drifting aimlessly and rescued six members on October 27.

The search for the missing fisherman was called off on October 28 morning and the rescued fishermen were brought back to safety.
