The Karnataka High Court on Thursday directed the state government to consider offering compensation to the parents of a teenager who died of electrocution after he came in contact with a live wire while erecting a flag post to celebrate Independence Day at a government school in Karikere.

The deceased is identified as Chandan. The incident took place when Chandan and two others were preparing to hoist the national flag and the pole that they were carrying came in contact with an overhead live wire. All three of them collapsed to the ground due to the electric shock. They were rushed to a hospital where Chandan died later. The other two sustained are being treated for the injuries that they sustained in the incident.

A division bench of Chief Justice Abhay Oka and Justice N S Sanjay Gowda said, “We direct the state government to instruct the Tumakuru Deputy Commissioner (DC) to look into the said incident. The state government shall consider offering compensation to parents of the deceased boy immediately. The state shall also ensure that proper medical treatment is extended to the other two boys,” it noted. The Bench also added that the government should bear the cost of treatment being extended to the injured.

Further, the court instructed the DC to file a detailed report and to produce a certificate mentioning the cause of death apart from medical certificates issued taking into account the health status of the two boys who are injured. “Compliance with the above directions shall be made within a period of two weeks from today,” it noted on Thursday.
