Mysuru: Congress candidate Pushpalatha Jagannath was elected as the 21st Mayor of the Mysuru City Corporation while Shifa Ahmed of the JD(S) was elected Deputy Mayor.
Pushpalatha defeated BJP candidate Sunanda Palanetra with a margin of 17 votes in the mayoral elections held today.
The tenure of the previous MCC Council came to an end on September 4 and the fresh election was held on August 31 and the results were declared on September 3. However, the Mayoral election was delayed due to various reasons. The post of the mayor had been reserved for a woman (general category) and that of the deputy mayor for Backward Class (A) candidate.
The alliance was necessitated as there was no clear majority for any party in the 65-member Council. The BJP is the single largest party with 22 seats followed by Congress 19, JDS 18, BSP 1 and five independents.
